Post-mortem MSCT diagnosis of acute pericardial tamponade caused by blunt trauma to the chest in a motor-vehicle collision

چکیده
A 30-year-old male car driver died after an accident involving a collision with a guardrail barrier on a viaduct. He died before cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was applied at the accident scene. Autopsy was not permitted due to local culture and family wishes. Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) was used to image the body. The results revealed that death was due to acute pericardial tamponade. A series of rib fractures, and a transverse fracture of the sternum were found. External examination revealed a minor skin abrasion in the middle of the sternum. Reports of MSCT identification of acute pericardial tamponade are rare in cases of motor vehicle collisions. Furthermore, the mechanisms for blunt chest trauma were discussed to explain the injuries.

Right Atrium Laceration with Pericardial Tamponade: A Rare Presentation of Blunt Cardiac Trauma
Cardiac laceration from blunt thoracic trauma is not a common presentation. The rate of mortality due to this injury is very high since it is not diagnosed and treated immediately. In this study, we present the case of a 65-year-old man with blunt cardiac trauma, causing right atrial rupture and pericardial tamponade. Successful management of this patient was firstly done with initial pericardi...
متن کاملA case report: hemothorax caused by rupture of the left atrial appendage
Cardiac rupture is defined as a full-thickness myocardial tear; this injury after blunt chest trauma is rare, and is associated with high mortality. Blunt cardiac rupture typically presents with either cardiac tamponade or massive hemothorax, and is often unrecognized in the context of blunt chest trauma. It is a little known fact that pericardial effusions can decrease due to pericardial lacer...
متن کاملEvaluation of PERSH Criteria to Avoid Unnecessary Chest X-ray in Patients with Blunt Chest Trauma: A Qualitative Study
Background: Chest X-rays (CXRs) are traditionally performed to determine intra-thoracic injuries in all blunt chest trauma patients in Shahid Bahonar hospital in Kerman. As there are some disadvantages upon CXR and radiation exposure, therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the role of CXR in the diagnosis of intra-thoracic injuries caused by any blunt chest trauma. Me...
متن کاملIsolated right atrial tear following blunt trauma
Cardiac chamber rupture in blunt trauma is uncommon and is associated with a high mortality rate. We report a patient involved in a motor vehicle collision with an isolated right atrial injury resulting in a pericardial effusion associated with hemodynamic compromise. A 20 year-old intoxicated female was transported after sustaining a collision in her vehicle. The patient remained mildly hypote...
